Victoria BC became the Pacific headquarters of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1843 and is located on Vancouver Island. Its vitality later merited Victoria becoming the capital of British Columbia beating out New Westminster and not relinquishing the honour to the now huge metropolis of Vancouver.
